Dependent Visa
Dependent Child Sponsorship to Canada:
Bringing your children to Canada as dependents is a dream for many parents who have immigrated to Canada. The Canadian government offers a dependent child sponsorship program that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their dependent children for permanent residency in Canada. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the dependent child sponsorship program, including eligibility criteria, requirements, and important considerations to keep in mind throughout the application process.
Eligibility Criteria for Dependent Child Sponsorship
To be eligible to sponsor a dependent child, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is 18 years of age or older. The child you are sponsoring must be your biological or adopted child, and must be under the age of 22, unmarried, and not in a common-law relationship. If the child is over the age of 22, has a spouse or common-law partner, or is unable to support themselves due to a physical or mental condition, they may still be eligible for sponsorship if they meet certain criteria.
Requirements for Dependent Child Sponsorship
The requirements for dependent child sponsorship are straightforward, but there are a few key considerations to keep in mind throughout the process. First, you must provide proof of your relationship to the child, including a birth certificate or adoption papers. Additionally, you must demonstrate that you are financially able to support the child and any other dependents you are sponsoring. This involves providing proof of your income, such as your most recent tax return, and demonstrating that you meet the minimum income requirement for the number of dependents you are sponsoring.
It is important to note that the dependent child sponsorship process is a multi-step process that can take several months to complete. In addition to the eligibility criteria and requirements outlined above, you may also be required to undergo a medical examination, provide police certificates, and undergo background checks.

Other Relative Sponsorship to Canada:
Bringing loved ones to Canada is a dream for many Canadians. However, not all family members can be sponsored for permanent residency. The Canadian government has a list of eligible family members that a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor. Beyond immediate family members such as spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children, there is also the option of sponsoring other relatives such as grandparents, siblings, nephews/nieces, and cousins. This type of sponsorship is referred to as “Other Relative Family Sponsorship.”
Family sponsorship is a way for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their close relatives to live in Canada. If you have family members who are not considered as immediate relatives, such as a spouse, common-law partner, parent, or grandparent, you may still be eligible to sponsor them under specific circumstances.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be over 18 years of age
- Be able to provide for the basic needs of the sponsored relative(s)
- Have a stable income
- Not have a history of default on a government loan or of not fulfilling a previous sponsorship obligation
- Proof of your relationship with the relative you wish to sponsor
- Proof of your financial capacity to support the relative(s)
- Police certificate(s) for both you and the relative(s) you wish to sponsor
- Medical examination results for the relative(s) you wish to sponsor
Orphaned Brother, Sister, Nephew, Niece or Grandchild:
- The relative must be related to you by blood or adoption
- Both parents of the relative must have passed away
- The relative must be under the age of 18
- The relative must be single - unmarried and not in a common-law or conjugal relationship
Other Relative Related by Blood or Adoption:
- You must not have any other living person you could sponsor instead, such as a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, son or daughter, parent, grandparent, orphaned brother or sister, nephew or niece, or grandchild
- You must not have any other relatives who are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian under the Indian Act
- The relative must be the only person you can sponsor in this category
If the relative you wish to sponsor has any accompanying family members, such as a spouse or dependent children, you must include them on the same sponsorship application.
