The Family Sponsorship program
The Family Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, age 18 or over, to sponsor certain family members to become Canadian permanent residents. This program is designed to reunite families and help them establish themselves in Canada.
Who Can be Sponsored:
- Spouse: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their legally married spouse or common-law partner for permanent residence.
- Dependent Child: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their dependent children for permanent residence.
- Parents and Grandparents: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence through the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program.
- Orphaned Relatives: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their orphaned relatives who are under 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship.
- Other Relatives: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor other relatives if they have no other relatives who are eligible for sponsorship and no other options for immigration.
Basic Requirements for Family Sponsorship:
- The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, age 18 or over
- The sponsor must meet certain income requirements
- The sponsor must agree to provide financial support for the sponsored family member for a certain period of time
- The sponsor must meet certain criteria for the relationship
Criteria for Various Relationships:
- Spouse/Common-law Partner: The sponsor and the sponsored person must be legally married or living in a common-law relationship for at least one year
- Dependent Child:The sponsored person must be a biological, adopted or stepchild of the sponsor and under the age of 22
- Parents and Grandparents: The sponsor and the sponsored person must be related by blood or adoption
- Orphaned Relatives: The sponsored person must be an orphaned relative of the sponsor and under the age of 18
- Other Relatives: The sponsor must not have any other relatives who are eligible for sponsorship and no other options for immigration
Sponsorship Obligations:
- The sponsor must provide financial support for the sponsored family member for a certain period of time
- The sponsor must inform the government if the sponsored person does not comply with the conditions of their permanent resident status
