Lost your job while on a closed work permit? Worry not, you have some options.
If you are working in Canada with a closed work permit, it’s important to know what to do in case you lose your job. A closed work permit is an employer-specific work permit that allows you to work in Canada according to the conditions associated with the permit, such as the name of the employer, the length of time you can work, and the location of your work.
If you lose your job while holding a valid closed work permit, you will no longer be able to work for your current employer or any other employer until you change the conditions of your work permit. However, you are still legally allowed to stay in Canada without employment as long as the permit remains valid.
If you wish to continue working in Canada, you must change the conditions of your work permit. You can apply for a new work permit if you want to start a new job. However, you are not allowed to start working a new job for a new employer before you get a new work permit with new conditions of employment.
Alternatively, you may apply to switch to an open work permit, which is not tied to one employer or occupation. With an open work permit, you have the freedom to move between workplaces, employers, occupations, or locations within Canada. You can apply for an open work permit from inside or outside Canada.
It’s important to note that open work permits are exempt from some of the requirements associated with obtaining a closed permit in Canada. You do not need to have a job offer or a positive LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to be eligible for an open work permit.
